Home Remedies for Cough and Cold in Babies

A cough or cold in a baby can worry any parent. Babies often get these illnesses because their immune systems are still maturing. A cold is usually mild and goes away on its own in about a week.  But the right home care can make your baby feel much more comfortable during this time.

Why Babies Catch Cold So Often

A babys nose; is small. Even a little mucus can block it fully. This makes feeding and sleeping hard for them. Cold weather change in season and contact with other children at home can all trigger a cold.

Safe Home Remedies That Actually Help

Saline nose drops A few drops of saline in each nostril loosen mucus. This helps your baby breathe and feed better. Use only baby safe saline or one produced from boiling and cooled water.

Steam in the bathroom Sit with your infant for a few minutes while running hot water in a closed bathroom. The steam loosens mucus naturally. Never leave your baby alone near hot water.

Extra fluids Breast milk or formula should continue as usual. Extra fluids thin the mucus and keep your baby hydrated. This is one of the simplest ways; to help a baby heal faster.

Gentle nose suction Mucus from a clogged nose can be removed with a bulb syringe. To allow your infant to breathe while eating, gently do this before feedings.

Keep the room comfortable An excessively dry atmosphere can exacerbate a cough. A humidifier or a bowl of water in the room can add moisture to the air.

Warm oil massage Warm mustard or coconut oil can be used to gently massage the chest and back for comfort. Keep the oil warm rather than hot, and always test it on your own skin.

What Parents Should Avoid

A newborn younger than a year old should never be given honey. Infant botulism is a dangerous infection that could result from it.

Over the counter cough and cold medicines are not recommended for babies. Health officials in India now strongly advise against providing these drugs to children under the age of two since they carry more risk than benefit.

When to See a Doctor

Most colds pass on their own. But some signs need medical attention right away.

  • Fever in a baby under three months
  • Fast or noisy breathing
  • Baby refuses feeds
  • Continuous crying or unusual sleepiness
  • Cold lasting more than a week without improvement
